Root canal treatment
Does a root canal hurt?
The tooth is fully numbed, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain. The tooth may be tender for a few days afterwards, which usually settles with ordinary painkillers.
How many visits does a root canal take?
Most cases need one or two visits. Badly infected teeth or teeth treated before may need more. You will know after the first examination.
Do I need a crown after a root canal?
Back teeth usually do, because they take the chewing force and are more likely to crack after treatment. Front teeth may only need a filling.
Do I need antibiotics before a root canal?
Usually not. The main treatment is cleaning the infected canals. The doctor decides whether antibiotics are needed in certain cases, such as spreading swelling.
How long does a root canal take?
Most cases take one or two visits, depending on the number of canals and how inflamed the tooth is.
Can I need a root canal without pain?
Yes. Sometimes the nerve has died without pain and the infection only shows on an X-ray.
Can I go back to work after a root canal?
Most people go back to work the same day. The numbness can last a few hours, so wait before eating.
Can I chew on the tooth after a root canal?
Avoid heavy chewing on it until the final filling or crown is fitted, as the tooth is more likely to break before then.
Other services
How many visits does a crown take?
Usually two: the first to prepare the tooth, take the digital scan and fit a temporary crown, the second to fit the final crown.
Will the crown look natural?
The crown's shade and shape are matched to your teeth, and the material is chosen for where the tooth is and how much chewing force it takes.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed while it is prepared, so most patients feel no pain. Mild sensitivity can follow and fades within days.
How long does a crown last?
A crown can last many years with daily care and regular check-ups. Habits like teeth grinding can affect it, and the doctor will advise you on how to protect it.
Am I a candidate for an implant?
It depends on the amount of bone and your general health. Your case is assessed with a panoramic X-ray in the clinic before any decision.
How do I look after an implant?
Brush and floss daily like a natural tooth, with regular check-ups of the implant and the gum around it.
Can old dark fillings be replaced?
Yes, when they are worn or there is decay underneath, or for appearance after an exam.
Does a filling need anaesthetic?
The tooth is usually numbed while decay is removed so the visit is comfortable. Some very small fillings may not need anaesthetic.
Is orthodontic treatment suitable for adults?
Teeth can be straightened at different ages. The first assessment shows whether it suits your case.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
It depends on the case. You get an estimate at the first assessment visit.
Does whitening change the colour of crowns or fillings?
No. Whitening only affects natural teeth, so it is planned around any existing front crowns or fillings.
Does whitening cause sensitivity?
Some temporary sensitivity can follow the session and usually fades within a few days.
