Tooth abscess: symptoms and when you need urgent care

What a tooth abscess is, its symptoms, how it is treated and when it becomes an emergency. Clear information from an endodontist in Amman.

In short

  • An abscess is a pocket of pus from an infection in the tooth or gum.
  • It doesn't go away on its own; the cause needs treating, often with a root canal.
  • Swelling spreading to the eye or neck, or trouble swallowing or breathing = emergency now.

What is a tooth abscess?

A tooth abscess is a collection of pus caused by a bacterial infection, usually at the tip of the root of a tooth whose nerve has died, or in the gum. It does not go away on its own and the cause needs treating.

What are the symptoms of a tooth abscess?

Severe throbbing pain that can spread to the ear or jaw, swelling of the gum or face, pain on biting, sometimes a bump on the gum that leaks bad-tasting fluid, and possibly a fever.

How is a tooth abscess treated?

The source of the infection is treated. In many cases that means a root canal to clean the infected canals and keep the tooth, sometimes with draining the pus. Antibiotics do not replace treating the cause; the doctor decides if they are needed.

When is a tooth abscess an emergency?

If swelling spreads toward the eye or neck, if swallowing, breathing or opening your mouth becomes difficult, or you have a high fever and feel generally unwell, go to the nearest emergency department straight away.

For severe pain or swelling without the emergency signs above, call the clinic on 07 9525 8121.

Other questions patients ask

Will a tooth abscess go away on its own?

No. The pain may ease if the abscess bursts, but the infection remains and its cause must be treated.
